Hunt the fossilised dinosaur poo (and a Picnic Party)

The weekend after Sunnyboy's 7th birthday we had a picnic party. After our guests had arrived at the picnic area they were given explorer equipment and maps of the Country Park. The first activity was a hunt for the jetty.



We also handed out apples from our garden.



When they had returned from the jetty there was a dinosaur and a fossilised dinosaur poo at the picnic area.



The next activity was a hunt for five more hidden dinosaur poos (Sunnyboy and I had practiced hiding and hunting dinosaur poos in our garden the week before the picnic party).





When all the dinosaur poos had been found we ate our picnic and played more games.









After the picnic there was a cake with seven candles and seven Lego minifigures.



At the end of the picnic party we gave our guests books,



and Where's Wally sweet parcels.

A day out in London

Last week we had a day out in London with Sunnyboy's Nana and Grandad. The first place we visited was the V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green. After we'd finished looking around the museum we took the tube to Trafalgar Square.



We saw Big Ben in the distance,



and Nelson's Column up close.



Sunnyboy sat on the steps of the National Gallery,



and watched some street performers.



Then after admiring Nelson's Column some more,



we walked across the Thames,





and got on the tube again to go to the Princess Diana Memorial Playground in Kensington Gardens. Sunnyboy loved the pirate ship.













Back at home the next day we made a map of the route we took on the London Underground, starting at Bethnal Green and ending at Kensington Gardens.



A couple of days later we bought a secondhand copy of 'Getting to know London' by Rosemary Stones,



and enjoyed reading about some of the places we'd been to,







and more places we'd like to visit.

Inspired by Iceland

While we were searching for volcano resources and watching volcano videos on YouTube I was reminded of a video we saw last year inspired by Iceland. Just recently we had a long wait to change buses in town on a cold morning and as the bus stop was outside a travel agency I suggested to Sunnyboy we go inside, look at the holiday brochures, warm up and pass the time. I asked him if he'd like a holiday by the seaside but he was cold and fed up with waiting for another bus and said "no". Trying to tempt him into the travel agency I asked if he'd like a holiday on a boat or in the jungle and his eyes lit up. He agreed to go inside and told me "I'd like to have a holiday in Iceland."

More maps

Sunnyboy has been interested in maps for a long time and enjoys looking at different types of maps and globes. Recently we've been making lots of homemade maps, including maps of our bedroom, maps of our house and maps of the route into town. This is the map we've been working on this weekend.

Maps

Sunnyboy loves looking at maps and so we've had various maps stuck up around the house since he started showing an interest in them, but they were all getting a bit tatty. One of our recent charity shop finds was a set of glossy maps for £1, so today we updated our map collection. They look really good and should last longer than the paper ones did. I don't know how much Sunnyboy currently understands about maps but he enjoys looking at them and talking about where people and places are. He recognizes maps of the world, and will also tell me it's the world if he sees a globe or photograph of the earth from space.
