10-16th May 2009 is National Breastfeeding Awareness Week in the UK. This week new growth charts are being introduced in England, which provide accurate guidance on child growth and will replace current charts that were based on predominately formula fed babies.

I'm Made of Mama's Milk

The book I've chosen to share this week, 'I'm Made of Mama's Milk' by Mary Olsen, is the only children's book we own which includes photographs of human babies nursing. It's not hard to find children's books that are full of images of babies drinking from bottles and using pacifiers, but I would love to see breastfeeding portrayed more often in children's books as the normal and natural way to feed and comfort babies.

'I like to drink while warm in the bath'

Two of our other favourite breastfeeding children's books are Mama's Milk by Michael Elsohn Ross and Mama Mama by Jean Marzollo. You can read more about children's books that are supportive of attachment parenting and breastfeeding at Kellymom and Attachments.

Mummy and Me and an award

When Sunnyboy was younger I searched the internet to find children's books with positive images of breastfeeding and attachment parenting and last week's Book Sharing Monday post featured one that I found and bought for him from Amazon. This week I've chosen a book that we came across by chance in a charity shop. Mummy and Me is a Baby Einstein book by Julie Aigner-Clark (with illustrations by Nadeem Zaidi) and includes a baby deer nursing and a baby orang-utan who is carried everywhere by it's mother.

'I am a baby deer.
I am brown with white spots.
My mummy lets me drink her milk and
makes sure I am well fed.
"I'm hungry, Mummy!" '

An award:

I'm delighted to have been chosen to receive another Lemons to Lemonade Award from Chronicle of an Infant Bibliophile. This fantastic blog is a wonderful resource for anyone who loves children's books, with so many great book reviews that you're guaranteed to find something for your wishlist if you visit.

As I've already received this award very recently I decided to pass it on to one other blogger, who also has a passion for children's books, Het Lieveheersbeestje. She is a stay-at-home ladybird-mom in the Netherlands who is incredibly creative and blogs about crafts, children's activities and children's book reviews and book activites amongst other things. This is definitely a blog with great attitude!

THE LEMONS TO LEMONADE AWARD
The rules of the award are as follows:
1) Put the logo on your blog or post.
2) Nominate at least 10 blogs that show great attitude or gratitude.
3) Link to your nominees within your post.
4) Let the nominees know that they have received this award by commenting on their blog.
5) Share the love and link to the person from who you received your award.

Mama Mama

For this week's Book Sharing Monday I've chosen Mama Mama by Jean Marzollo (with illustrations by Laura Regan). It's a lovely poem about mothers and babies and each double page shows different mother and baby animal pairs. It's a great book for attachment parenting families as it includes animals nursing, baby-wearing and co-sleeping.

'Mama, Mama,
Hold me tight.
We sleep a cozy
Sleep tonight.'

Full-term breastfeeding

We've been nursing for 2 1/2 years now. Sunnyboy says that breast milk tastes better than ice-cream, strawberries, sosmix, cheese, lollipops, lentils and all his favourite foods. The other day I was wearing a t-shirt with a slogan on the chest and Sunnyboy pointed at the writing and told me it said breast milk in there.

Here's a video of us at The Great British Lactivists’ Rally at Parliament Square, London last year. (We only make two very brief appearances so don't blink!)

Mr. Rogers talks about nursing

I saw this Mr. Rogers clip on The Motherwear Breastfeeding Blog. Seeing the pigs nursing reminded me of our trip to the farm. It's great to see a children's tv show (even though it's an old show) talking about breastfeeding, and showing human babies nursing as well as baby animals. I'll show this clip to Sunnyboy tomorrow as I'm sure he'll love it.
